{I would have a graphic or a picture but I’m really bad at that so forgive me.}
With the start of a new year, many people (including myself) decide it’s time for a fresh start and they want to change how they do certain things. In light of this time, I decided to make a post for y’all to help if you are trying to get organized for the new year or if in general that’s not a strong point of yours. This is also a thank you for 800 followers!! That’s so unreal thank you so much I love every single one of you with all my heart <3 Fill free to send me asks if you have any more questions that weren’t addressed or answered in this post! {Also I have a studygram that may be inspirational so I completely recommend following it}
1. Getting Started w/ the Idea of Organizing
- The first thing you should do when trying to get organized is do research! The studyblr community showcases many forms of organization and there are also many youtube videos on how people organize.
- {My youtube playlist with organization videos – there isn’t a lot but it should get you started}
- Along with doing research on organization methods, you should find the motivation to want to organize. Being organized is almost like a lifestyle and if you aren’t motivated to maintain this lifestyle then you probably won’t succeed.
2. Organization Methods (mentioned above)
If you aren’t able to watch videos or don’t want to, then I will summarize some organization methods that are common (and that I use personally):
- Binders - These are super helpful for classes in which you do a lot of work and taking notes. I use binders for a majority of my classes in school and they have always worked well for me. I can do a post specifically about how I organize my binders if anyone needs it – just let me know!
- Folders - These are handy for classes where you get a lot of handouts but you don’t do a lot of paper-work. I use folders for classes where it’s mainly online based but we get many handouts to work.
- Accordion Folders - These are similar to regular folders mentioned above but I specifically use these folders for classes in which you have a wide variety of handouts and work. The only class at the moment I am using an accordion folder for is my AP English class because we have a lot of vocabulary sheets, handouts, classwork, homework, printouts, etc.
- Notebooks - These are good for classes like math where you take a lot of notes and do lots of practice problems. I normally don’t use just notebooks – hardly ever actually – but I have in the past and they have worked well. I usually pair notebooks with folders.
My personal recommendation is to use a mixture of all of these methods! It works for me because each class is different and has different requirements. I use binders for my math and science classes, a notebook & folder for two of my other classes, and an accordion folder for my language classes. It all just depends!
3. Actually Getting Started w/ Organizing
Now that you have (hopefully) done some research and have decided what kind of organizing needs to be done – it’s time to dive right in. This is probably the hardest part of organizing because it requires, in some cases, buying materials and spending a good amount of time going through your things and organizing them. Here are some tips that I have for this time:
- Do not procrastinate this! Once you start to put off this task you will never do it. Set a date and a time to sit down with your organization materials and just do it!
- If you need to buy materials on a budget, target and walmart both have school supplies that are cheap and (most of the time) in good quality! You don’t have to have expensive folders or notebooks – just something to do the job.
- Don’t be discouraged if this is hard for you. Organization does not come naturally to everyone! As long as you are dedicated and really want to do this, you can. It’s just like starting to run – at first it sucks a lot and it’s hard to maintain, but after you’ve set up a habit and done it for a while, it’s second nature to you.
4. Getting a Planner!!!
This is probably the most important part of getting organized and staying organized! There are many different kinds of planners, so I’ll link a few pages for you to look at:
If you search “planners” or “journals” on google you can also find so many results. You can also start a bullet journal! This is what I have started using and it keeps me productive and organized at the same time. Here are some bullet journal refs and layouts and master-posts.
- My personal bullet journal ref
- Sareena’s (studyign) bullet journal tag
- Bullet journal website
- Part of my own layout
5. Staying Organized
This is the second hardest part of being organized – keeping it that way. It’s really easy to just revert back to being disorganized and honestly it’s happened to me. But, there are a few things you can do to make sure that you stay organized.
- Try to set a date every week or biweekly or even every month where you go through your things and re-organize if you got disorganized.
- If you don’t want to just mass re-organize, write yourself sticky notes or set reminders on your phone until it becomes a habit to just stay organized.
- Remember the reason you got organized! It will keep you motivated and make it easier for this to be done.
In the end, whether or not you end up an organized person is up to you. It is a lifestyle choice and it can be hard for a lot of people, but it’s not impossible to achieve! Goodluck with getting organized and I hope everyone who read this benefitted somehow! <3
